Synopsis
Based on a weekly serial novel by Ikenami Shotaro for the magazine Shuukan Asahi (1974-1983), the drama tells the story of the Sanada family. Originally serving the Takeda Clan they ruled the northern district of Shinano. The story begins right after the death of Takeda Shingen, continues through the rise of Tokugawa Ieyasu who founded the Tokugawa shogunate and covers roughly the period 1580-1610.
This was the 2nd of 3 productions aired by NHK between 1984 and 1986, during which time NHK's annual taiga dramas covered modern and contemporary history. 'Sanada Taiheiki', along with 'Miyamoto Musashi' and 'Musashibo Benkei', were specially made by NHK for jidaigeki fans in the meantime. For this reason these dramas are often included in lists of taiga dramas even though they are technically excluded from the official taiga continuity.
