The dub really makes a difference. In the last episode, the big reveal scene, the tone of the English was kind of like for a comedy, which actually was pretty funny. But the Japanese dub plays it straight horror, and that works pretty damn well.

Yeah, no. To dub something is to put sound and voice into it. What you're getting confused on is that we usually refer to "dubs" as English dubbed audio. Dubbed audio can be whatever language and it will still be a dub (b/c that's literally the term for it).
