Greeting Folks! How are you? Me? I'm fine!
So this is the final batch of Pollyanna. There are quite a few changes in this batch.
On the video side of things I'll give a brief summery of the process. To start with the overall image quality of the disks are terrible. Compressed and rainbowed to hell. Not to mention the dot crawl. Thank fully the Rainbowing was an easy fix, I just did a light SSIQ pass. The crawl was a challange since none of the normal filters seemed to work on it. I wound up with a degrain denoise combo on it. A stabilizer filter was also used.
The Big issue was the switch from interlaced 30 fps to VFR Progressive. The overall image quality improved a lot and there is a notable increase in file sized at that point. But they introduced a frame blending problem. I spent several days trying to figure out the pulldown pattern before i realized the switch over. Took me ages to find a filter combo to handle that. Wound up using SRestore in Omode 2 with VFM.
For the Subs I'll give a dirty rundown. Dark can do better later.
The OCR was simple enough. Tweaked a few threshold values and it went fine. Single color font. A lot of false positives though. Once again Licca and Co. don't know how to time subs to save their lives. The TL wasn't too bad, but they did a lot of over formal/strict Translation in places, plus they reused a lot of stock TL phases. A lot of that got reworked not to mention the timings were basically redone from scratch. We also retranslated the second OP and touched up the first ED.
And as a final Note I'd like to once again thank Seijiro of Inka-subs for helping us with a bit of Italian that popped up.
Pollyanna was the most work-intensive project so far. It's the show I started properly retiming and TLCing on, and fixing up what was there was enough of a challenge itself.
And if you're wondering why this one took so long: After I finished 41-51, we decided against an immediate batch and I instead went and did another full editing/TLC/Timing/QC pass. Add to that the Kanketsu Bans and Sara, and here we are.
As for the timing, for most of the show Licca did a pretty consistent precise timing job - except their encode was 60fps and our OCR got timings that were off by multiple frames (it's usually accurate to within a frame). No choice but to go through and manually retime them to modern standards. Timing got less precise in the last quarter of the show (lots of lead-out especially), but by then I had enough experience timing to not struggle too hard.
As for the OCR itself, it was clean except for constant dropped or swapped periods and commas and a bunch of other consequences of the typeface Licca used. It's all the errors you have a hard time spotting. There were also a bunch of dropped lines that made it into our releases (usually the famous Licca 5 frame lines), which along with remaining typos was one of the triggers for the batch - along with adjusting the first couple of episodes to the TLC and Editing style I had gotten into over most of the series Speaking of which:
There were a number of smaller (and bigger) translation mistakes that I tried to fix. Tone and register were also issues, not to mention the wonky grammar that I rewrote and fixed as much as I could. The second OP was also mostly retranslated, and the other songs (7 in all) got minor fixes.
Typesetting and styling is as usual, Arial with a dash of /pos. Nothing crazy, but it's not like this show needs anything more. And it's more readable than Licca's if you ask me.
Japanese subs are of course included as well.
Well, that's all folks. Now it's time to go back and work on new projects. Until then, have fun with Pollyanna.
@FishingForSwords
1. This version is fully softsubbed while Licca's is hardsubbed.
2. This uses a much newer and considerably better (if not perfect) encode of the R2J DVD.
3. The subs have been edited to improve translation, grammar, language style and timing.
4. This version also includes the Japanese VobSubs included on the DVD if you're into that.
