The whole idea is to have a BDMV alternative and a very space conscious solution. If neither satisfy you, you can go and download other torrents.
@Tsukudakobashi we experimented with AV1 and despite our powerful hardware, it is still painfully slow to encode using it. 2-Pass encoding of 5 minutes at 208Kb/s took us ~6h 30 min in ffmpeg. Compared to h265 with the same settings, it only took ~7 min in ffmpeg (a x57 speed diffrence). This allows us to test and experiment with other bit rates to find the sweet spot for quality and size.
Another reason is the target audience of the encode. Not to write a 2000 word essay on the matter, a tl;dr would be: there aren't many devices that support harder decoding of av1, making it more power hungry (for battery powered devices) and overall harder to playback.
