The 2020 USBD from GKIDS/Shout Factory, with an encode based on a new 4K scan. *But wouldn't it look horrible if you made a 4K scan of a film that was most likely produced at 720p?* From what I've read, Tokyo Godfathers was originally made entirely digitally, then printed on to 35mm film, which is why a 4K scan is possible to do without it looking downright bad. [27 Comparisons between the USBD and JPBD](https://slow.pics/c/zgdVnY6y)|[5 comparisons between the JPBD and UKBD](https://slow.pics/c/vzmcN2uw) The USBD is an improvement in most areas compared to the JPBD and especially the UKBD. The picture looks clearer and you can make out detail that wasn't visible before. The color also seems to be better, more vibrant. Some of the grain has been removed, which unfortunately results in color banding in dark areas in some shots, but I didn't find it too distracting personally. Overall, the pluses overweigh the minuses here, definitely making this the definitive version of Tokyo Godfathers. ~~As of writing, none of the encoded uploads on Nyaa use the USBD, so if you prefer it over the JPBD and UKBD after checking out the comparisons, you've got yourself a winner by default.~~ Thanks to herkz for telling me that there actually are uploads by Commie that use the USBD. Ignorant me didn't check... After that initial hiccup, I've now muxed in Commie's subs as well. From the quick glance I took, they seem like a great upgrade over the Niizk subtitles I had at first. The USBD has the new English dub. Is this the first time Hana's been voiced by an actual trans person? I also recommend checking out the "Making Of" documentaries, as you'll be to watch Kon himself, dressed up as Hana, run across a field alongside his staff members for animation reference. Wild. #### Extras * Making Of Tokyo Godfathers I (1920x1080, 29.970fps interlaced, eng subs) (22min10s) * Making Of Tokyo Godfathers II (Unexpected Tours) (1920x1080, 29.970fps interlaced, eng subs) (25min57s) * Mixing For Surround Sound (Interview with Keiichi Suzuki) (1920x1080, 29.970fps interlaced, eng subs) (6min45s) * The Process Of Animation (Commentary by Character Designer & Animation Director Kenichi Konishi) (1920x1080, 29.970fps interlaced, eng subs) (14min2s) #### Specifics of this release: Tracks were retimed to match when needed. there's actually a few other releases based on the US BD but i don't think any of them are particularly good. most of them are 8-bit or bitrate starved.
"TOP 10 TIMES THE USA BD WAS BETTER!!!"
Much appreciated. Thank you!
