I prefer Sephirotic but netflix subs are better than Sephirotic's ones so i'd still go for this. I mean it's quite obvious that a release with twice the filesize will have negligibly better grain retention. The reason you should go for seph is that he color corrected the fuck out of a ton of scenes, frame by frame. Both releases are way more than good enough though, and probably evangelion doesn't even deserve that much attention anyway.

@Kuromancer looks like it does. Don't know if jensen did the same as Sephoritic but I guess we have to find out for ourselves. @Interruptor I believe Dekinai's subs are more recent than Sephoritic's. Find it hard to believe that Netflix subs are better for anything. If this is better than Sephoritic's and 2d4u's encode I might do a remux.

The official english translator is good from what I gathered. Sephirotic kind of QC'd 25 years old subs or something like that.

the netflix subs are probably better on the whole but they have a lot of issues and just using them untouched is unwise but if you're downloading beatice-raws expecting any effort to be put into the subs, you're in the wrong place

What kind of problems exactly? You mean timing and typesetting or translation/adaptation quality? I'd believe you with the former, official companies give 0 shits about them. Also, this could still be considered a good base encode for someone who wants to fix said issues with the subs.

If anyone else knows, there are only russians and ukrainians in our group (beatrice). Russian subtitles for Netflix are not bad, English, as I heard, too. And I always prefer official subtitles. I did not do color correction. The main goal was to reduce the file size as much as possible while maintaining quality and fix episode number 16. About episode 16: I tried to perform an up-scale dvd (having the source of the original broadcast on tv in '95). But the result did not suit me. I have also watched several recordings of 1080 broadcasts on Japanese channels. But we couldn't find a version of Episode 16 with the correct exposition and acceptable quality for creating an encode. Therefore, we used bdbox.

apparently the true-hd audio used here is not actually lossless? mpv gives me errors about the lossless check failing, am i just missing something on my desktop or is this an actual issue with this release? also re: ep 16 the upscale here looks all right but Yurasyk is still what you should go for.

True hd does not store any information about the source encoding. You cannot check the bitness (24 or 16) and other parameters for this format. Flac and other formats store information about the source file before encoding, so they pass similar checks. But Dolby true hd is a lossless format.

actually i always convert pcm flac dts-hd truehd and whatnot lossless audio codecs to AAC q0.7 since i can't hear any difference at all, even on studio monitors. For release it's OK to have it in lossless so i know it's best possible quality, but for actual listening and storage just using AAC seems to be most reasonable option (that is if you don't want to process the audio any further)

guys 5.1 track is much more cleaner than 2.0 i think its remaster ... you should just keep that track instead of 2.0

The PwnSweet version of episode 16 is the best restoration of that episode, though it's sadly pretty soft being mostly worked on from the available, DVD sources. Sephirotic's subs have some ESL stuff but are accurate where it counts e.g. lore stuff where other translations have failed. Netflix subs are better on the whole at translating dialogue in a natural manner and in a few places it makes more sense than any other translation, but it also changes the meaning of plenty of lines (mostly small talk) to fit American tastes and lingo more in a way that is awkward and cringy to many non-US English-language viewers, e.g. the "worthy of my affection" nonsense but also less politicised/publicised cases like changing the dog joke on the radio at the end of... ep 14 I think. Have to admit this encode does beat Sephirotic on grain and detail preservation picture-wise, it's just a shame it couldn't emulate Sephirotic's excellent custom colour correction on the episodes that need it (most of all 1, 2, and 19). This is how I see the state of play re: Evangelion encodes right now, at least.

@xzpyth if the audio's from the 2015 BD set then the surround track is the Renewal audio from 2003 while the stereo strack is the original 1995-6 audio, that's why.

@Rrobynne yea but it's not just upmix from 2.0... it's completely mixed and mastered anew in 5.1, i was just pointing out that 2.0 audio sounds horrible in comparison idk why would someone wanna keep that audio [old mix in 2.0] in file even more so prefer it to remaster (2.0 should have been bonus audio file instead)

@Deago yeah, beatrice's other eva encodes are great but this one isn't as good as yurasyk's.

I don't find yellow, red and green strokes around lines in NGE to be a problem. You are confusing digital for analog. Color bleed, uneven strokes, etc. are the norm for film. My task was to keep 100% similarity to the original bdmv, while achieving a size much smaller than that of yurasyk's encoding (which was done: 82gb vs 115gb.). In addition, the suppression of color ghosting in Yurasyk coding causes a decrease in the overall color saturation of red and green in some scenes. Yurasyk and I ended up with 2 different approaches to coding, and you can choose for yourself the one that suits you best. PS Regarding episode 16 - yes, it turned out a little worse for me. Maybe someday we will get better source material for this episode or I might want to redo it.

@Jensen I see, I thought those coloured lines were part of the encoding's artefacts, thanks for the clarification. Still, those green lines look weird and distracting to me, and are very noticable on my 4k monitor, so I guess I'll pass and go with my subjective criteria here. @mcbaws21 I am interested to see your upcoming release for this series.

I tried a lot of things and can't seem to get the 5.1 audio to play with the episodes. I'm using VLC. Even on my stereo earphones the 5.1 version sounds better and more clear. Can anyone help?
