Synopsis:
Otonashi awakens only to learn he is dead. A rifle-toting girl named Yuri explains that they are in the afterlife, and Otonashi realizes the only thing he can remember about himself is his name. Yuri tells him that she leads the Shinda Sekai Sensen (Afterlife Battlefront) and wages war against a girl named Tenshi. Unable to believe Yuri's claims that Tenshi is evil, Otonashi attempts to speak with her, but the encounter doesn't go as he intended.
Otonashi decides to join the SSS and battle Tenshi, but he finds himself oddly drawn to her. While trying to regain his memories and understand Tenshi, he gradually unravels the mysteries of the afterlife.

Additional note:
HAV1T group encodes using AV1 codec. AV1 is more efficient than HEVC, and retains good visual quality even at low bitrates. Due to novelty of codec, playback might stutter. For optimal viewing experience we recommend using latest VLC or MPV.
Audio is encoded using Opus codec at 96kb/s stereo which provides great audio quality. We will continue to use it for HAV1T releases in the foreseeable future.
If you notice audio/subtitle desync or weird video artifacts, please comment below with a timestamp, we will try to fix those issues.
are you guys a relatively new group? I haven't seen any of your releases on Nyaa. I also didn't know much about the av1 codec so i just read up on it. as a layman could you tell me some pros/cons?

Is it really worth using a new codec for a smaller file size that may cause stuttering in playback though?
@robo666 @Astral HAV1T has been made around 6 months ago, but the team behind it is closer to two years. We are enthusiasts of video codecs and bleeding edge compression and have tested AV1 codec extensively even before it was implemented in ffmpeg.
The pros of AV1:
1. Very high efficiency at low bitrates, beating HEVC (h.265) by about 30%
2. Royalty free, that means anyone can use it for their own business without paying predatory licensing of HEVC
3. Guaranteed adoption due to it being developed by ALL major hardware and software companies (Intel, AMD, Google etc...)
4. In our tests it showed to be easier to decode than HEVC at 8bit content in software. We are doing 10bit because it removes the need to use grain to avoid banding, however the decoder (DAV1D) has received close to none optimizations for x86 processors. We expect the decodability to be dramatically improved in the coming months.
The cons:
1. As of now the encoders have very poor multi-threading support, and that requires us to make tools and workarounds around this issue so our cpu's could be utilized fully, however the performance is on par with HEVC at veryslow preset.
2. 10bit decoding performance issues due to lack of assembly optimizations
3. Somewhat lacking information about the codec, we had to gather all the info and benchmarks by ourselves.
4. Somewhat poor constant quality control, so there might be unexpected dips. Because of that or releases are a little bit bloated to avoid that. When this issue gets patched, it will be feasible to do ~60MB 720p anime episode at acceptable quality.

Well it is, if you consider the future benefits. The issue is not with the encode itself, but with the decoder, which is not optimised for 10bit playback. But as the decoder matures, the playback will improve. And it's not just about the small size, but the fact that all modern web browsers support AV1. In future, you'll be streaming Blu-ray encodes right from your browser. The only thing that's not supported yet in browsers are chapters and ASS subtitles, but I guess JavaScript can handle them, and YouTube already has some sort of chapters support, [sample here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnExl0Ssn5E). The JavaScript Library to render ASS subtitles is available [here](https://github.com/Dador/JavascriptSubtitlesOctopus). Now combine it with WebTorrents based platform like [this](https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube), and you have an Anime Streaming Service, which has small sized, high quality content.
AV1 is the future, so it's great that someone has adopted the codec in anime community.

I have this torrent already but I'll check it out for myself. 60mb files for 720p is pretty crazy but I'm not really worried about space. most people want 1080p too so at that rate maybe 1080p would be around 150mb? Saving space is nice but cheap storage is always available in the end it's more about quality. I'll check some screens against the copy of angel beats that I have. Interested in seeing more of your torrents for sure.

why would anyone want to stream anime, especially when the filesizes are so small?
btw that JS library to render the subs isn't as good as you think. it crumbles pretty easily under most fansubs because it can't render fast enough.

Ummm, no particular reason, but it's really convenient. Like I can continue watching on my tablet what I was watching on my pc, without the need on installing any kind of app or redownloading / transferring it to my tablet. It has the benefit of streaming from any timestamp of the video, don't know if that's possible with sequential download in most torrent clients. Also I need not to worry about clearing storage space on my mobile device, since nothing is really stored. So to me, streaming is quite hassle free. So I'll ask you, why would anyone want to download anime, when you can stream it? That's perfect for seasonal anime which you only watch once and delete it and wait for the Blu-ray (for archiving purpose).

I'm aware, JavaScript and fast don't go well together. A bit less bloated subs and the optimization of the library might be a workaround, but I agree it'll never be as good as the desktop players. It'll work well if libass is compiled to WebAssembly though. The whole libmpv can be compiled to WebAssembly,
@Salarx I download over streaming because the quality is better. I also re watch anime I like multiple times. I make webm's and gifs. I like having an extensive library on hand. If i don't have internet connection I can still watch whatever it is i want to watch. by archiving anime in the future if a show I have downloaded is unavailable I can make a torrent. It's just plain better streaming is for plebs.

Damn right. @robo666 simply cuz you do it this way (even I do it), doesn't mean the common viewers follow the same trend. Majority of viewers stream their anime from shitty sites. But here the encode size is already small enough that it needs not to be made shitty. And having a streaming site doesn't mean you won't be able to download the content. For mini-encodes like this, you have both the options, so you'll be downloading the same encode that you'll be streaming. Sure it doesn't make sense to stream near lossless Blu-ray encodes, but for content like this where each episode averages 150 MB, it's perfect. And I'll repeat it, you can download it the same way you download it now, so you won't be losing on anything.

Cool, dropped this show some time ago, but want to pick it up again. Nice opportunity to try out this shiny new codec. I have a weak 2ghz i3 dualcore, so I think it'll be a good test for the lower end pcs.
Edit:
Well that didn't go so good, unfortunately. My PC wasn't able to handle it. I was using mpv and closed all other programs and it just wasn't enough.
