The quality of the actual images doesn’t change, it’s just how the files are stored inside the PDF.

The problem was that if I had illustrations that all-together were around 10 MB, the PDF would then end up being around 21 MB, which just really isn’t right. Especially when the actual quality of the images doesn’t change.

Essentially it was converting a bunch of lossy files into lossless files. And that ended up making those files really bloated because the lossy files have noise in them, which increases the size by a lot if just converted straight up into a lossless file.
